Why Am I Stronger When I Am Fat?


This is general information! Not everyone is going to be stronger when they are fatter and/or fluffier but for a lot of people this tends to be the case. When you’re bulking (usually when we are fatter), it’s a great time to focus on building that strength. Bulks should be about, gaining muscle and strength, those are our main goals.

One of the easiest ways to gauge or keep track of our bulk is by tracking PR's.We all like being more jacked or hitting PRs or even both. What kind of PR should we be looking for? Well PRs can be in either volume, rep PRs or 1rm PRs. PRs for everyone! When on a bulk these should be easier to hit, and there are a lot of reasons to this.

These reasons are Recovery, Leverages and Calories!


1. Recovery: The more food you get to eat, the better and faster your body can recover. That sounds simple but we hear it a lot.


2. Leverages: You may have gained size on your leverages. You just have more overall size to push or lift weight. Everywhere you have more mass to move mass. With the squat, the stronger your core is, the straighter it is, the more weight you can move and having this extra weight helps you stay tighter throughout.

3. Calories: This is a measurement of energy. You’ll have more of it to just train more. Longer, harder, faster and more. You can do more volume on a caloric surplus which will allow you to hit more volume, this means you get more practice at the movement to perfect it. When you’re leaner you will have the opposite effect as well.

Essentially, when you’re in a deficit you will lose some of those leverages. Also when you lose that mass you will also be more likely to be doing cardio. We know that cardio is good for overall health but does take up that energy that could be used for recovery.
